Praha 12, or Excerpts from My Homework

Politics and Culture of Central Eastern Europe, 1918-Present

Required reading from:

Crampton, R.J. Eastern Europe in the Twentieth century – And After

“The apocryphal story of the ex-Austrian officer who had to consult his French army manual before telling his ex-Russian infantrymen how to load their ex-English ammunition into their ex-German rifles had more than a grain of reality.”

Jewish History in Central Europe 1000 C.E. – present

Required reading from:

Rabinowitz, L. The Social Life

“Jews were employed as bakers, although the people were not averse to eating non-Jewish bread.”

Hola, L. New Czech Step by Step

“Plavate?” (Do you swim?)
“Ahno, plavu.” (Yes, I swim.)

In a specific aside to relevant family members, Trudi called today. She said she’d had my number down incorrectly for awhile. As usual, she asked me lots of questions at once and then let me say about two words before going on. It was good to hear her voice. It reminded me of the last time I was this close to her. I can still hear the way she said, “CafĂ© Mozart? Good, I come to find you very soon.” And how even though she probably hadn’t seen me since I started walking, her face lit up and she cried, “Danichka! You look just like your mother!”

She even caught me when I slipped in a Czech word or two, and cried that I would be an excellent speaker by the end of my trip.

I wish I could meet her - but she probably wouldn't know me since i don't look like mom :-p I dunno, I'd feel awkward to be so spoiled i guess (like she did to you in vienna)

Well, I hope you get to visit her soon. It will feel good to be spoiled for a weekend, and she is just soooo good at it! In any case, as we discussed today, you need to start moving girl, whenever you can, to wherever you can. Get a hostel card, pick a friend, and start exploring the Continent!
And Liora - I'm sure she'd find a way to recognize you too!

Eyore - draw the genderbreaddude on the board. There should be four lines, one through the head, one through the palms, one through the waist, and one through the feet.

The head line should have "male/female" as its ends, the hands line "man/woman" the waist one "masculine/feminine (or butch/femme)" and the last one "likes girls/likes boys"

If I'm wrong about any of that, someone here will surely correct me.

And YLM, I'm moving, I'm moving. I haven't yet found a travel buddy, although a group of girls are headed to Vienna soon. If Trudi accepts, I'll go with them.

I'm trying to get my student ID/eurailpass/hostelcard, but the bureaucracy hasn't gone through yet. We have to be escorted to the university to have our cards made, and our escort has an abscessed tooth this week. We've been told to sit tight, it's coming, don't worry.

Welcome to Cesky Republiky.
